Free Seminar – April 7th

The Impact of Technology on My Child’s Mental and Sexual Development – What Every Parent Needs to Know.

Technology has changed many aspects of our world. According to a recent study (Pew Research Center survey, 2018) 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online ‘almost constantly.’ With the onset of the Internet, the nature of how we parent our children is also changing.

Children today are one click away from a hypersexualised online world, one that did not exist when today’s generation of parents were growing up.

  • The average age for a person’s first contact with online sexual material is approximately 11 years of age.
  • 90% of 8-16-year olds have viewed online sexual images, mostly while doing homework (London School of Economics, January 2002).

Do you know what your child is voluntarily or involuntarily exposed to while online?

Children today are typically learning about their sexuality from what they view on the internet. However what they often see can be age inappropriate, difficult to understand, overwhelming, and addictive due to its extreme and graphic nature. Depending on a child’s age, the impact on their developing brain can be significant and long-lasting.

Parents have a responsibility to understand the nature of the online (including social media, video gaming, pornography etc) world that their children are navigating so as to make informed decisions about how they wish to address the topic and hopefully to develop an age-appropriate and affirming dialogue. Ignoring the online world that our children are inhabiting is no longer an option.
